From a first business in the States to a green card, a marriage, or citizenship, or protecting the status you’ve already built, the path from Denmark to the U.S. is rarely a straight line. We help Danish citizens navigate it with clear, honest guidance, wherever you are in the journey.
U.S. immigration law only. For Danish nationality questions, you’ll want a Danish advokat.

GOOD QUESTIONS
Common questions, answered.
Can a Danish citizen get an E-2 treaty investor visa?
Yes. Denmark and the United States have had a treaty in force since 1961, which means Danish citizens who make a substantial investment in a real U.S. business can qualify for the E-2 treaty investor visa. Danish companies trading substantially with the U.S. may qualify for the E-1 treaty trader visa. One wrinkle worth knowing: the treaty does not extend to Greenland, so a Greenland-born Danish national cannot use it. Eligibility turns on the investment, the business, and your role in it.
Is Denmark eligible for the Diversity Visa (green card) lottery?
In recent program years, yes, and Denmark’s entry includes its overseas components. That produces an odd result worth knowing: a person born in Greenland is Danish for the lottery but not for the E-2 treaty. Eligibility is set year by year by the U.S. Department of State, so always confirm against the current year’s official instructions before entering.
Can I keep my Danish citizenship if I become a U.S. citizen?
On the American side, the answer is straightforward: U.S. naturalization does not require you to renounce another citizenship. Whether Denmark lets you keep yours is a question of Danish law, not American, and Denmark’s rules have changed over time and carry their own deadlines. Denmark has permitted dual citizenship since September 2015. Before you take any step that could affect your Danish nationality, confirm your own situation with the Danish authorities or a Danish advokat. We’ll handle the U.S. side; that side we leave to people who practice it.
I've been coming on ESTA. Why isn't that enough?
The Visa Waiver Program is built for short visits, ninety days at a time, and it isn’t a status you can build a life on. It also comes with real limits: entering under the program restricts your options if you later want to change or extend status, and an overstay can end your access to visa-free travel permanently. If the U.S. has become where your work or family actually lives, the honest answer is that you need a status designed for that.
Can I get a green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen?
Yes. Marriage to a U.S. citizen is one of the most direct routes to a green card. The process differs depending on whether you’re already in the United States or applying from Denmark, and how you last entered matters more than most people expect. We’ll map the right path for your situation during your consultation.
I'm a green card holder who travels constantly. Can that put my status at risk?
Yes, it can. Long or frequent absences may raise questions about whether the U.S. is still your permanent home, and they can also delay citizenship eligibility. Depending on your travel, a re-entry permit or moving toward naturalization can protect you. We’ll review your pattern and find the safest path.
Do I need to be in the United States to work with you?
No. The practice is fully virtual and built for exactly this. Clients in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, and everywhere else meet with us over video, and cases move forward securely online regardless of where you are.
Do you handle Danish immigration or Danish citizenship?
No. We practice U.S. immigration and nationality law only. For Danish visas, residency, or nationality, you’ll want a Danish advokat. If your situation needs both sides handled, we’re glad to work alongside one.
